Yesterday, an Afghan delegation comprising 14 representatives of Afghanistan’s leading anti-corruption agencies arrived in Kabul. They returned from a five-day anti-corruption workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. There, around 40 attendees shared ideas on monitoring and evaluating anti-corruption activities and discussed ways to inform the public about achievements. The Afghan-German Cooperation coordinated the workshop together with the German-Indonesian programme Assistance in Preventing and Combating Corruption (APCC). U4 Resource Centre and the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) co-hosted the event.

Yesterday, the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) conducted an event themed ‘Increased Participation of Women in the Extractive Industry’ related to International Women’s Day. The activity brought together female entrepreneurs from the Afghan Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AWCCI) and the Afghanistan Chamber of Industries and Mines (ACIM) to facilitate exchange and cooperation. A particular focus was on how to promote women’s participation in the Afghan extractive sector. About 120 people, 100 of them women, participated. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the event.

This week, the Sixth Renewable Energy Coordination Committee (RECC) met at the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) in Kabul. About 60 attendees, including government officials and stakeholders from the private and public sector, discussed trending issues in the energy sector, such as the Afghan government’s 2000 megawatt renewable energy package. They also presented recent achievements and provided a status update on current activities. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Energy Sector Improvement Programme (ESIP) supported the event.

Yesterday, a workshop for journalists and representatives from Civil Society Organisations took place at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) in Kabul. In total, more than 20 people participated. The activity put particular emphasis on the Afghan Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (AEITI) and the MoMP’s online transparency portal. It aimed at drawing journalists’ attention to the Afghan mining sector. The MoMP, the Afghan-German Cooperation and AEITI facilitated the workshop.

This week, provincial Departments of Women’s Affairs and the Afghan-German Cooperation conduct various activities in close cooperation on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March. These include celebrations, theatre programmes and the distribution of leaflets that inform about women’s rights and raise awareness of the importance of legal documents such as the Tazkira. In total, more than 3,000 visitors are expected at the events in Balkh, Baghlan, Jawzjan, Sar-e Pul, Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan. Also, a legal helpline for women is now available that offers legal advice free of charge.

Today, a series of five-day workshops for staff from Provincial Education Departments (PED), Teacher Training Colleges (TTC), and schools ended in Badakhshan. In total, 150 people, including almost 70 women, participated. The seminars took place in Kabul and the provinces Herat, Balkh, Samangan and Badakhshan. Participants learned about recent changes in the Afghan education system and how to implement them. These changes aim at improving teacher training and thus overall education quality in Afghanistan. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Basic and Secondary Education Programme (BEPA) facilitated the events.

Forty young female painters from Mazar-e Sharif, including high school and university students, participated in a painting competition. The painters had a month to visualise consequences of war and peace artistically. Yesterday, an exhibition in Balkh’s provincial capital’s Family Counselling Centre (FCC) displayed the paintings. 55 people, mostly women, came to see them. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Promotion of the Rule of Law (RoL) supported the event.

Over the last 20 days, Balkh Province’s Teacher Education Directorate (TED) conducted a learner-centred methodology workshop in Mazar-e Sharif on subject-specific methodology for Mathematics and English. In total, 75 lecturers of Teacher Training Centres (TTCs) from the provinces of Balkh, Badakhshan, Herat, Samangan, Nangarhar, Kandahar and Bamyan participated. They will pass on their newly acquired knowledge and skills to future teachers, resulting in improved lessons for more than 15,600 student teachers, almost 10,000 women and 5,700 men. The Afghan-German Cooperation and the Swiss government supported the activity financially.

Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation’s Energy Sector Improvement Programme (ESIP) conducted a workshop at Serena Hotel in Kabul. The activity aimed at identifying and assessing the private sector’s needs for fulfilling its role in promoting Afghan energy production. In total, almost 80 male and female representatives of private and public institutions participated in the event, including high-ranking government officials, businesspeople and academics. The results were included in a one-year implementation plan for ESIP that aims at facilitating private involvement in the energy sector as well as promoting energy generation from renewable sources.

Feyzabad, Badakhshan, 19th February 2019 – Yesterday, the Afghan-German Cooperation handed over a newly constructed conference hall to Badakhshan’s Provincial Governor Office (PGO). The building is located inside the PGO’s compound in Feyzabad and offers space for more than 250 people. The hall shall be used for official meetings and conferences as well as for public events such as celebrations of national holidays and governmental accountability sessions. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Stabilisation Programme Northern Afghanistan (SPNA) financed the construction works at a total cost of more than AFN 24.1 million.
