Locally Produced Milk and Cheese

When the German Government began promoting the regional dairy in Balkh in 2009, the objective was to produce high quality milk, cream, cheese, butter, buttermilk, yoghurt and quark at affordable prices. In cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, hygiene was improved and raw milk processing brought into line with international standards.

Over 1,300 farmers are now tied to the dairy. Many of them deliver milk each morning to nearby collection points, from where it is transported to the dairy. The finished products are in high demand and can be bought at 45 shops in Mazar-e Sharif and at many local markets. The dairy is well on its way to becoming economically self-sustaining with long-term success.

The farmers who supply the dairy are organised into six cooperatives. The project offers cooperative members training in animal husbandry, with the aim of improving the farmers’ milk yields. Instead of the three litres per day they previously delivered, many are now able to deliver up to ten litres. That means they earn the equivalent of about EUR 2.00 per day – a good income in Afghanistan, where average daily per capita earnings are EUR 1.30. As it is often women’s work to look after the livestock, it is the farmers’ wives who particularly benefit from this.
