Reviewing a New Assessment Programme for Improving TVET Schools

Herat, 1st September 2019 – On Wednesday and Thursday, 60 participants, men and women, from 15 provinces attended a conference in Herat to review the results of the pilot phase of a School Functionality Assessment Programme. The assessment programme, which started in April this year and runs until December 2019, aims at improving teaching quality and school performance in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools. Conference attendees, including headmasters from participating TVET schools, Provincial Education Directors (PEDs) and officials from the TVET Authority (TVETA), came together to discuss the achievements and challenges of the programme. The Afghan-German Cooperation supports the assessment programme financially.

New Power Supply Network for Mazar-e Sharif Benefits 20,000 Residents

Today, Balkh’s Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) and the Afghan-German Cooperation signed the contract for upgrading a power supply network in the eastern part of Mazar-e Sharif. More than 20,000 residents in the neighbourhoods of Ali Chopan, Karte Wahadat, Bapa Padshah and Islam Abad will benefit from the improved energy infrastructure. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) supported DABS in identifying the need for this project and is funding the project’s implementation at a total cost of about AFN 160 million.

The Afghan-German Road to Maintaining Sustainable Infrastructure

Today, the importance of operations and maintenance (O&M) in infrastructure development was emphasised by representatives from the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Afghan-German Cooperation, the German Embassy, and other Afghan ministerial bodies in Kabul. At the workshop, the key issues of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Afghanistan and the Government of Germany on the O&M of infrastructure measures were discussed, and a roadmap for future O&M related measures laid out. Both sides are committed to progress, provided the conditions are met. In April this year, it was agreed that an envisaged commitment of EUR 40 million for 2019 in the energy sector is tied to improvements in O&M.

Pilot Project: Advanced Training for 80 Tradespeople in Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif

Sunday marked the last of a two-day conference in Kabul on the further training of tradespeople and company owners. Ninety-five people attended the event, including officials from the Technical Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), the Federation of Afghanistan’s Craftsmen and Trade (FACT), guilds, the municipalities of Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif as well as vocational teachers. The participants agreed to launch a pilot phase for the further training of two trades, metalwork and car mechanics, benefitting about 80 people in Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif. The Afghan-German Cooperation will develop and provide the required learning materials.

Tackling Corruption in Mining: MoMP Signs Agreement with Afghan-German Cooperation

Yesterday, acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Nargis Nehan, signed the implementation agreement for the next phase of the programme for promoting good governance in Afghanistan’s extractive sector (MinGov). The project aims at increasing state revenues, promoting investment and curbing corruption in the sector. 33 representatives from the German Cooperation and the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) including 7 women attended the ceremony at the Serena Hotel in Kabul. The Afghan-German Cooperation is funding the programme’s current phase with over AFN 327 million.

Ostad Shagerdi: Teachers and Apprentices Come Together to Improve Vocational Training

Last weekend, a two-day teacher conference took place in the city of Herat. Eighty teachers from 24 Ostad Shagerdi pilot schools as well as 100 apprentices and officials of the Technical Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) attended. Among the participants were 47 women. Attendees came together to discuss ways to improve vocational teaching in Ostad Shagerdi schools. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the event to facilitate the modernisation of the traditional apprenticeship system in Afghanistan.

Mobilising the Media for a Green Afghanistan

On Tuesday in Kabul, more than 60 journalists – including 20 women – as well as forest restoration and media experts gathered to discuss Afghanistan’s natural resources and to report on joint efforts for sustainable environmental development. The Afghan-German Cooperation officials explained their measures, initiatives and plans for a green Afghanistan. The event was supported by the Afghan-German Cooperation.

Afghan-German Cooperation’s Economic Development Programme Extended – 37,000 People Benefit

Yesterday at a ceremony in Kabul, the Ministry of Industries and Commerce (MoIC), signed the amended implementation agreement for the Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme for Sustainable Economic Development and Employment Promotion (SEDEP). The amendment confirmed the programme’s continuation from January 2019 to June 2020 and accompanying funding of AFN 1,125,000,000. About 37,000 people will benefit. Mr Zohoroddin Shirzada, Deputy Minister at MoIC, attended the event along with representatives from ministries, stakeholders and the Afghan-German Cooperation.

Learning Across Borders: Workshop for Sustainable Energy Master’s Programmes

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 5th August 2019 – Yesterday in Dubai, a three-day baseline study workshop for developing a sustainable energy university degree ended. Four Afghan universities and one German university will work in tandem, linking their expertise to create the course and teach the students via blended-learning – engaging with them online and face-to-face. Twenty-one attendees, men and women, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Water, the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), the Afghanistan Renewable Energy Union, and respective universities participated. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported the event.

Empowering Women: Ministry of Women’s Affairs Meets Indonesian Counterpar

A five-day workshop that brought together members of the Afghan Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) and the Indonesian Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (MoWECP) ended today. It was the first of a series of three workshops that will reinforce cooperation between the two ministries. The two delegations discussed best practice examples of women’s economic empowerment in Indonesia. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Open Policy Advisory Fund (OPAF) has supported the cooperation between Indonesian and Afghan institutions since 2018.
