Safety Net: Sports Lecturers Receive First Aid Training

Today marks the last of a five-day first aid training for sports lecturers, which took place in Kabul. Thirty people, including 18 women, participated in the training. Participants included lecturers from Teacher Training Centres (TTCs) in seven provinces and ten academic members of the Teacher Education Directorate (TED). The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Basic Education Programme for Afghanistan (BEPA) facilitated this training. Around 8,000 TTC students, including 6,000 women will benefit as a result of the training.

Standard Mining Training for Provincial Mining Inspectors in Kabul

Tomorrow, a four-week standard mining training will end in Kabul. Twelve mining inspectors from various provinces, including Parwan, Kapisa, Bamiyan, Panjshir and Daikundi attended. This training enables the mining inspectors to ensure that rules and regulations in the extractive sector are respected. The trainers, who were from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP), had previously participated in a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme. The Afghan-German Cooperation supported both the mining training and the ToT.

Ostad-e-Shagerdi: Coordination Workshop for Nationwide Rollout

Yesterday, officials from Afghanistan’s Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Authority, Deputy Education Directors from 20 provinces, and school directors from 24 TVET-schools came together for a workshop in Kabul. In total, 80 participants, male and female, discussed next year’s phase of the Ostad-e-Shagerdi programme’s nationwide rollout. More than 4,000 apprentices will benefit from this improved vocational training and education in the future. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s TVET programme supported the event.

Youth and Private Sector: Building Skills and Awareness in Afghanistan’s Renewable Energy Sector

From 19th to 21st July, the Afghan-German Cooperation’s Energy Sector Improvement Programme (ESIP) and its partners conducted a Mid Term Review for 2019 in Dubai. Twenty-nine attendees, men and women, participated, including representatives of the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW), the Afghanistan Renewable Energy Union (AREU) and other stakeholders from the private and public sector. Agreements for a second phase of Youth Entrepreneurship Support (YES) and for establishing a steering group for enhancing renewable energy in the domestic private sector were signed.

Towards Afghanistan’s Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Re-Validation

Yesterday, a workshop for civil servants, and representatives from civil society organisations (CSOs) and private companies took place at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) in Kabul. The workshop laid the foundation for re-validating Afghanistan’s membership to the EITI standard for 2020, after being suspended in early 2019. The MoMP’s Deputy Minister for Policy and Programmes, Wali Ullah Zadran, chaired the event. Sixty people, men and women, including key government personnel and the entire Afghan Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Multi-Stakeholder Group participated.

Kick Off Meeting in Dubai for Reviewing Afghanistan's Net Metering Concept

Yesterday, the first of three meetings for reviewing Afghanistan’s net metering concept was held in Dubai. Net metering allows utility customers who generate their own electricity to export excess energy to the grid in return for credit. The eleven attendees, men and women included, comprised of government officials and stakeholders from the private and public sector. The group discussed existing net metering regulations as well as suggestions for improvement, clarity, and acceptance. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Energy Sector Improvement Programme (ESIP) supported the event.

About 3,500 Future Teachers Benefit from Human Rights and Gender-Sensitive Training

Yesterday was the last of a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) refresher workshop on the training methodology of human rights and gender in Kabul. About 100 lecturers of Afghanistan’s 48 Teacher Training Centres (TTCs), including 12 women, participated and deepened their knowledge on human rights and gender. These lecturers are now well equipped and able to pass this knowledge on to their student teachers. The Teacher Education Directorate (TED) implemented the event with the support of the Afghan-German Cooperation.

Promoting Women’s Role in the Extractive Sector

Today, employees of the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DoMP) completed a three-day workshop in Feyzabad, Badakhshan on the role of gender in the mining sector. Seventeen DoMP staff, including three women, as well as two female representatives of the Ministry of Women Affairs participated in the event, which was organised by the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum’s (MoMP) Gender Unit. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s programme Promoting Good Governance in the Extractive Sector in Afghanistan (MinGov) supported the event financially.

Efficient Work Processes in the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriates

Yesterday marked the end of a six-day workshop in Dushanbe, Tajikistan for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR). Twelve ministry representatives, including two women, developed measures to improve and make work processes more efficient within the MoRR’s Deputy Ministry of Finance and Administration. The Afghan-German Cooperation’s Open Policy Advisory Fund (OPAF) supports MoRR and its deputy ministries with various capacity development activities in implementing its strategic plan 2015 – 2019. Main objectives are to improve the provision of services for Afghan citizens and inter-ministerial coordination of topics relevant to migration.

Improving Vocational Education: TVET Conference in Herat

For two days, 88 representatives of the Technical Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVET-A) met in Herat for a special conference. Participants from 13 provincial TVET offices and 23 technical schools discussed solutions for current challenges of Ostad-e-Shagerdi schools. Attendees agreed on the renovation of 18 technical schools and institutes in 13 provinces, including Kabul, Balkh, Herat and Nangarhar. The Afghan-German Cooperation supports this measure financially with a total amount of about AFN 280 million.
