Earth Day 2021

21.04.2021
Today on the 22nd of April we celebrate International Earth Day!

Once covered in lush forests, Afghanistan has lost almost all of its trees over the past decades. Years of conflict and the overexploitation of natural resources have destroyed the original green landscapes. But forests are necessary for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Without forests as buffers against water masses, widespread flooding affects many people’s lives – destroying homes and livelihoods.

The Afghan-German Cooperation project Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) is tackling these issues on the path towards a green Afghanistan. So far, the FLR project has planted more than 320,000 trees and revegetated more than 1,000 hectares of landscapes in five provinces. The project also enhances people’s resilience to natural disasters and creates permanent jobs by setting up local tree nurseries – bringing back the forests of Afghanistan.
